ABSTRACT

Mucormycosis is an acute, fulminate and fatal fungal infection in humans. Rhizopus spp. is the most common cause; however, additional species of Rhizomucor, Absidia, Apophysomyces, Saksanaea, Cunninghamella, Cokeromycer, and Syncephalastrum spp. are known to cause invasive disease in hospital individuals. There are several predisposing conditions such as diabetes, malnutrition, acidosis, steroid therapy, malignant hematological diseases, renal insufficiency; often occur in bone marrow transplant recipients. Delay in diagnosis can be fatal in a broader and more heterogeneous population. An aggressive diagnostic procedure such as destructive surgical debridement along with medical therapy and Amphotericin B is indispensable towards the cure.
